The LCA Board of Directors is a volunteer board elected by the membership of the LCA. The following is a list of the current member of this board, followed by their responsibilities.

A Statement of LCA Board Duties and Responsibilities

 

THE BOARD SHALL:

  1. Provide a bold vision for the operation and preservation of Camp Arcadia.

  2. Accept leadership roles.

  3. Make decisions.

  4. Lend expertise.

  5. Give affirmation and encouragement to the staff.

  6. Provide stability within the Board and within the Membership.

  7. Constantly review the LCA mission (purpose) statement and ask:
    What is our goal?  How far have we come? Where are we going? Are we moving closer to our mission than before?

 

ALL BOARD MEMBERS SHALL:

  1. Hold membership in the LCA; pledge support of the LCA purpose and mission.

  2. Be familiar and have experience with Camp Arcadia and the LCA.

  3. Pledge support of the Christian faith.

  4. Be willing to apply their unique talents and skills in support of Camp Arcadia.

  5. Be able to give time to making phone calls, chairing a committee and doing follow-up.

  6. Be a regular personal donor of record.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Attend meetings of Board and Membership.

  2. Support Board resolutions verbally and in actions.

  3. Support the staff and administrators morally, spiritually and physically.

  4. Respect confidential information and other member's opinions.

  5. Voice opinions at meetings.

  6. Serve as a committee head.

  7. Prepare committee reports in a concise and timely manner.

  8. As requested, prepare a study or develop a concept outside of committee responsibilities.

  9. Observe Camp activity with discretion and comment on strengths and weaknesses to the Camp Director and to the Board when appropriate (be alert).

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Monitor the compliance of programs and policies with the LCA purpose and mission.

  2. Establish long-range goals.

  3. Evaluate current programs and policies for effectiveness.

  4. Report the "state of the LCA" to the membership.

  5. Select (elect) officers and administrators of the LCA.

  6. Promote the LCA at every opportunity.

  7. Be alert for areas of improvement.

  8. Determine that sound financial policies are in place.

  9. Determine that the LCA is in compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

  10. Promote positive relations with the town of Arcadia and with the Arcadia Cottage Colony Association.

 

EXCLUSION OF DUTIES

  1. Board members are board members only when legally convened.  At other times board members are volunteer helpers at camp, just as other members.  Board members should not dictate to the camp management or be involved in day-to-day camp operations except when specifically asked for help by the Camp Director or in emergencies.

  2. Board members should always move toward policy-making (what we do and why).  The Camp Director should decide how to "get it done."

  3. Board members should confirm the Mission and Purpose of Camp Arcadia; the Camp Director should "make it happen."

OTHER

  1. Board members should be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses; submit invoices to the Camp Director.

  2. Board members will not be reimbursed for food, travel or lodging to attend meetings except under unusual circumstances.

  3. Board members shall be insured and held harmless for suits brought against them for actions relating to the fulfillment of their duties.

 

TOTAL BOARD CONFIGURATION

It is valuable to have some Board members with the following qualifications:

  1. Prior experience on a non-profit Board.

  2. Knowledge of non-profit law.

  3. Knowledge of accounting.

  4. Experience in communication.

  5. Experience in fund-raising.

  6. Good mediator of group disagreements.

  7. Experience in land use and facilities management.

  8. Experience/contacts with Lutheran clergy and professors.

It is valuable to have a balance of members reflecting our clientele: different age groups and male/female.

 

SUMMARY

  1. Hire, supervise and support the Camp Director.

  2. Help the LCA stay true to its mission.

  3. Help the LCA achieve its corporate financial goals.
